KENNEWICK — The welding program at Columbia Basin College received a sizable donation from Bechtel National. Bechtel, which is building the Hanford Waste Treatment Plant — or vitrification plant — donated $30,000 to the program, the college announced Thursday.

The junior at North Platte High School is one of 16 students attending the National Skills USA competition June 19-24 in Kansas City, Mo. Will Winchester, a welding teacher at North Platte High School, explained Skills USA is a student lead organization focused on preparation for careers.

Murphy and classmate Landon Hunt, both seniors at North Platte High School, recently performed well at a welding competition in Tulsa, Okla.
